Private George A. Greene

The background of this North Irish Horseman is not known at present.

George A. Greene enlisted in the Lancers of the Line in late 1916 (regimental number 24297). Between 3 and 30 July 1917 he was transferred to the North Irish Horse (regimental number between 2610 and 2614 – later Corps of Hussars No.71909).

Later that year or during 1918 he embarked for France, where he was posted to one of the squadrons of the 1st North Irish Horse Regiment. This regiment served as corps cavalry to VII, XIX, then V Corps from its establishment in May 1916 until February-March 1918, when it was dismounted and converted to a cyclist unit, serving as corps cyclists to V Corps until the end of the war.

In March 1919 Greene was one of fifteen North Irish Horse cyclists who transferred to the Army Cyclist Corps (No.14819), serving with the 4th Cyclist Battalion at Rolsdorf, part of the Army of Occupation on the Rhine.
